A non-preachy, jargon-free handbook to what the Bible is, where it came from, and what it’s all about.

Description

People quote the Bible when they talk about politics, sex, money, and parenting. It’s one of the most significant books of all time.

But although the Bible is an enormous book (about three times as long as Moby Dick), you’ve probably only heard snippets. A verse on a card here, a psalm at a funeral there, a passage at a wedding, a parable in a sermon … small pieces of Scripture used to make a point.

But what is the whole Bible actually about?

That’s what this guide will help you answer. The Beginner’s Guide to the Bible gives you an overview of where the Bible came from, why it was made, and what its main points are. You will understand how such a huge body of work rests on just a handful of ancient characters. This book is short enough to be read on a rainy Saturday, but rich enough to use as a handbook for years to come.

If you read this book, you’ll have a foundational understanding of the Bible, including:

  • Where the Bible came from
  • The four characters that tie the whole Bible together
  • What the Bible was made for
  • What every book of the Bible is about
  • What words like “Messiah,” “prophet,” and “temple” actually mean

Whether you’re a Christian or not, by the time you’re done with this guide, you’ll have a working knowledge of the Bible that most Christians go their whole lives wishing they had. You’ll be able to hold a conversation about the Bible with a pastor, a priest, an atheist, an agnostic, or anyone that’s interested in talking about the Bible with you.

About the author

Jeffrey Kranz founded the Bible literacy website OverviewBible in 2013 to help more folks get an idea of what their favorite book was about. He grew up studying the Bible from a nondenominational Protestant perspective, and has been helping others understand the Bible since 2004. Millions of people have used his website to learn about the Bible, and after years of being asked to write a book, it’s finally on its way.

I can’t stop talking about your program for people. I purchased the book and always share videos with anyone I can! Bible literacy is a real issue and what you’ve put together is comprehensive but also simple; it’s essential but also doesn’t talk down to people. It’s amazing. Thank you for doing this!

Jeffery, you have a real gift to make the Bible come alive for folks who are not willing to put in the time and effort to really understand God’s Word. I have used your illustrations to encourage believers to dig back into the Bible with a renewed enthusiasm. Please continue this work.

This book is the perfect read for what I needed. Its embarrassing I’ve been to Catholic Mass probably 600 times and read the New Testament front to back within the last year and I’m embarrassed to admit how much I learned. I’d highly recommend this to anyone looking to actually understand the Bible for what it is, and be more accurate in any day-to-day discussions about the book or the Christian faith itself.

The premise of this book is useful and straightforward, and the contents are approached with so much integrity. This read provides more clarity on what the Bible is and how the documents fit together than I received in over 25 years of church attendance, small group study, and personal reading. Plus, it’s friendly and engaging.

I’ll be recommending it to many other people.
