We’re familiar with the story of how the wise men visited the young Christ child—but there’s an element of this story that modern Christian readers often miss.
Matthew uses the story of Jesus’ discovery by the Magi to draw some connections to another great hero of the Bible: Moses. Moses was the lawgiver and the greatest prophet in the Old Testament. Matthew’s gospel sets Jesus up as the new lawgiver and an even greater prophet than Moses—and he sows the seeds of this idea right in the opening story.
